Stone uses the correspondence letters of Vincent and his brother Theo as his core source material. The description of his feelings in his last moemnts is just too flat and mechanical. I come away from this novel knowing much more about Van Gogh than I previously knew and I found it to be a very touching story.

Especially since he’s not one of my favorite artists, it drove me crazy that he spent his whole life doing something that he was so irivng about, yet mediocre at.

But, he also isolated himself much of the time. Many people told Van Gogh to give up art because he was not succeeding within the narrow confines of accepted good Dutch art.

The room fairly burst from excitement. He must truly have been mentally ill–a tip to understanding his art.

Ston found it amazing that his brother, Theo, was so generous and supportive of Vincent. I enjoyed the part when Vincent was with the coal miners. People close to Van Gogh’s life, like Paul Gauguinare also characters in the novel. Maybe this is the only way to really write this kind of a story where the only source are the letters of Van Gogh.

The prose is mawkish in some spots, and the entire book is awash in cheap sentimentality. The only hard irvin is to be loved. I knew little about Van Gogh, aside from Starry Night basically, so everything about his life was knew to me.
